A Day in the Life of a Senior Engineer (Transportation/Traffic)

You are at the forefront of using best practices and brainstorming creative traffic operations and safety solutions for challenging transportation projects. You lead, support, and mentor an interdisciplinary team to help deliver multimodal transportation projects in a wide range of contexts. You may help lead and participate in the development of design plans for signing and pavement marking, traffic calming, maintenance of traffic, and traffic signals for transportation projects and streetscapes in urban, suburban, and rural settings. Your expertise may be called upon to develop recommended safety improvements for Safe Routes to School studies, safety action plans, and other safety studies. You may use programs such as Synchro, Highway Capacity Software, MicroStation and/or AutoCAD to fulfill production work on your projects. You'll have the opportunity to use state of the art tools and practices to help create safe and sustainable multimodal transportation networks. You also could work on a wide range of projects that inform your design work, including road diet feasibility analysis, multimodal traffic studies for new development, roundabout studies, trail/roadway intersection studies and designs, parking studies and design guidance. You will share your knowledge with staff and clients, to help develop feasibility studies, concept plans, and design documents, as well as mentor your colleagues to ensure that our projects are consistently of the highest quality.  

You participate in business development pursuits in your home region as well as across our North American offices. Your job can sometimes be challenging, but you get to work with a close-knit team that is passionate about the work and the communities that you serve.

We are targeting a salary range of $120,000 to $140,000 for this position.

Qualifications of a Senior Engineer (Transportation/Traffic):

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in civil/transportation engineering
  • Professional engineering licensure
  • 10+ years of relevant experience developing traffic engineering design plans, operational and safety analyses, and/or design documents (signing and pavement marking, maintenance of traffic, traffic signals)
  • 2+ years of experience serving in a project or design management role
  • Experience developing conceptual designs for intersections and corridors
  • Proficiency in one or more of the following: MicroStation OpenRoads, Synchro, Highway Capacity
  • Software, MicroStation InRoads, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, SIDRA, and/or VISSIM
  • Understanding of basic geometric design principles of roadways and industry roadway design standards
  • Understanding of MUTCD standards at the state and federal level
  • Experience developing construction documents and cost estimates
  • An interest in managing and mentoring staff

It would be a plus if you have any of the following:

  • PTOE licensure
  • Experience in Complete Streets, bikeway, and crossing design
  • Experience working on engineering projects in one or more of the following agencies: MDOT SHA, VDOT, DDOT, PennDOT
  • Exposure to AGi32 lighting design
  • Exposure to construction management
  • A strong interest in multimodal and active transportation design
  • Experience supervising, involvement in hiring, personnel matters, performance reviews, and/or staff mentorship

Work Schedule for a Senior Engineer (Transportation/Traffic)

This full-time position typically works a flexible schedule of 40 hours a week. We also provide employees with the flexibility and necessary equipment to work from home two days per week (i.e., Monday and Friday). The Silver Spring office of Toole Design is conveniently located close to regional trails and networks, with on-street bike infrastructure, and just a few blocks from the Silver Spring Metro Station (Red Line), MARC Station, and bus depot. The office is easily accessed on foot, by bicycle, and via transit.
