Toole Design Group in Silver Spring, MD is looking to hire an experienced and talented full-time Multimodal Planner. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team that plans and designs multimodal transportation infrastructure in a wide range of contexts from streetscapes and retrofits in urban settings to signature trail projects in suburban and rural areas that highlight and enhance the natural environment. We help clients find people-first solutions that prioritize active transportation at all different scales, from national pedestrian and bicycle planning and design guidance to plans for state DOTs and cities across the region, to intersection, corridor, and bikeway advancements. Our work includes pedestrian and bicycle network plans, safety analyses, Vision Zero action plans, Safe Routes to School plans and program management, design guidelines, conceptual design, trails and greenways, wayfinding, transit, and shared mobility. Underpinning our work is our unwavering commitment to safer, human-centric streets and places.

 

As a Multimodal Planner, you will develop relationships with clients and partners, manage exciting and challenging projects, oversee tasks and proposals, lead analyses, represent Toole Design in project and stakeholder meetings, pursue and win work, and reinforce our reputation as trusted experts. You’ll collaborate to deliver a variety of projects focused on making places and travel experiences better for everyone. You’ll be at the table with clients and colleagues from a variety of disciplines, integrating input from a broad range of stakeholders to create award-winning plans that lead directly to implementation.

 

This Multimodal Planner position provides a competitive salary and great benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, a health savings account (HSA), a flexible spending account (FSA), and all staff start with at least 24 days PTO. We are targeting a salary range of $83,000 to $95,000 for a Multimodal Planner, candidates with extra or exceptional qualifications may fall into a higher range.

  

Qualifications of a Multimodal Planner:

  • Four or more years of planning experience, preferably with experience in consulting
  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in transportation or urban planning, landscape architecture, urban design, or a related field, Additional experience can be substituted in lieu of a degree
  • Knowledge of multimodal transportation planning practices and techniques
  • Experience planning and conducting community and stakeholder engagement
  • Demonstrated success independently managing projects and maintaining client satisfaction
  • Strong writing skills and experience working as a lead writer for proposals and planning documents
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
  • Motivation to win work for a growing office including forming and managing client relationships, identifying potential opportunities, and developing proposals and interview materials

It would be a plus if you have any of the following: 

  • AICP certification
  • A working knowledge of GIS software (ArcGIS or QGIS) and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator and InDesign) 
  • Spanish language skills 

Work Schedule for a Multimodal Planner

This full-time position typically works a flexible schedule of 40 hours a week. We also provide employees with the flexibility and necessary to work from home up to 2 days per week. The Silver Spring office of Toole Design is conveniently located close to regional trails and networks, with on-street bike infrastructure, and just a few blocks from the Silver Spring Metro Station (Red Line), MARC Station, and bus depot. The office is easily accessed on foot, by bicycle, and via transit.
