A Day in the Life of a Senior Engineer 

You are at the forefront of brainstorming creative solutions for challenging projects. You lead, support, and mentor an interdisciplinary team to deliver multimodal transportation infrastructure in a wide range of contexts from roadway reconstructions, streetscapes, and signature trail projects in highly urban, suburban, and rural settings that highlight and enhance our environment. You use programs such as AutoCAD and MicroStation to fulfill production work on your projects. You will share your knowledge with staff and clients, to develop feasibility studies, concept plans, and construction documents, as well mentor your colleagues to ensure that our projects are consistently of the highest quality. 

You participate in business development pursuits across Northwest Arkansas as well as across our North American offices. Your job can sometimes be challenging, but you get to work with a close-knit team that is passionate about the work and the communities that you serve. 

You are part of an interdisciplinary team planning and designing multimodal transportation infrastructure in a wide range of contexts from streetscapes and retrofits in urban settings to signature trail projects in suburban and rural areas that highlight and enhance the natural environment. 

Qualifications of a Senior Engineer 

  • A bachelor's or master's degree in civil engineering 
  • PE license in Arkansas or ability to obtain within 3 months 
  • 10+ years of experience developing construction documents for trails, roadways, or highways 
  • 2+ years of experience serving in a project or design management role 
  • Proficiency in one or more of the following: MicroStation OpenRoads, Autodesk Civil 3D 
  • Experience developing construction documents and cost estimates 
  • Experience working on engineering projects in one or more of the following agencies: ARDOT (strongly preferred), City of Fayetteville, City of Rogers, City of Bentonville 

It would be a plus if you have any of the following: 

  • Exposure to construction management 
  • Experience developing scopes of work and fee for project contracting 
  • Experience coordinating utility, right-of-way, street lighting, traffic signals, and landscape and hardscape layout 
  • Experience analyzing and design stormwater infrastructure 
  • Having a strong interest in multimodal and active transportation design 
  • Experience on projects following ARDOT's local public agency project manual 
  • Experience in the various stages of marketing – business development, proposal strategy and writing, and interviewing

Work Schedule for a Senior Engineer 

This full-time position typically works a flexible schedule of 40 hours per week. We also provide employees with the flexibility and necessary equipment to work from home 2 days per week. The Northwest Arkansas office of Toole Design opened in 2023 and is in downtown Bentonville, adjacent to the Razorback Regional Greenway. The office is easily accessed on foot or by bicycle, with a number of local destinations available within a short walk or ride. 

We are targeting a salary range of $104,000 to $126,000 for this position.
