Valley Regional Transit seeks a Program Coordinator for the Safe Routes to School program. Reporting to the Safe Routes to School Program Manager, the Program Coordinator serves as the primary contact to the contracted school districts within the VRT service area for Safe Routes to School. Program Coordinators are responsible to facilitate and support program committees, as well as coach, guide, and promote new and existing programming elements in the community.

  • A natural leader who enjoys and is skilled at teaching, promoting, and empowering adults and kids to ride, walk, and scoot to school.
  • A great communicator who represents VRT in the community and interacts positively and proactively with our partners, contracts, stakeholders, and students.
  • An experienced cyclist who can ride high miles when needed and do basic repair to bikes.
  • Passionate about mobility, and sustainable public transportation.
  • Able to pass the school district background check and attain additional certifications and trainings (i.e. First Aid, CPR, Child Abuse Prevention) as required.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops programming and tracks data to ensure programming and activities support the six “E’s” of SR2S: Encouragement, Education, Engineering, Engagement, Evaluation, and Equity
  • Assists with recruiting members and guiding School Committees by meeting regularly, maintaining clear and consistent communication through a variety of channels
  • Ensures that all programs and activities meet the highest safety standards, with adequate documentation of accidents/incidents, and timely response to participant comments/concerns
  • Teaches bicycle, pedestrian, and public transportation education to participants, distributes active transportation safety equipment and incentives, and organizes events at schools and in the community (i.e. bike rodeos, bike camps, etc.)
  • Provides written narrative reports for inclusion in funding partner and other reports
  • Participates on internal and cross-functional teams to coordinate programs, equipment, and support functions
  • Identifies and documents safety concerns and gaps in mobility services, programs, and infrastructure that create barriers for individuals or groups to access the region’s mobility choices.
  • Provides timely, respectful and thorough customer service to internal and external customers
  • Serves as a passionate advocate for mobility and community health and wellness
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings, as scheduled
  • Represents VRT in public events or meetings, sometimes for long hours or extended hours
  • Maintains a professional and courteous demeanor at all times
  • Dependable and a self-starter
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) years of experience in related field or college study
  • Maintains current and relevant knowledge on Safe Routes to School program best practices as well as current bicycle and pedestrian laws
  • Current League Cycling Instructor status in good standing (may attain upon hire)
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification required (may attain upon hire)
  • Current Child Abuse Prevention training required (may attain upon hire)
  • Valid Driver’s license and must maintain a clean driving record
  • Experience driving and backing large vehicles
  • Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations and to prioritize accordingly
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be versatile, flexible, and willing to work enthusiastically within constantly changing priorities
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Physical Requirements

Must be able to perform physical requirements of this job with or without reasonable accommodation

  • Constantly involves sitting, walking, riding a bike, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talking and hearing
  • Must have sufficient manual dexterity to work with the fingers and to reach/handle items
  • May involve moderate to heavy physical activity performing random strenuous activities
  • Work will involve exposure to the weather year round
  • Must have good hygiene and dress in attire appropriate to be a guest at schools and community programs
  • Must be able to lift, pull, or push up to 75 pounds. Many SRTS events involve loading/unloading up to two vans worth of bikes and equipment.

Starting Salary Range:

  • $20.00 per hour starting pay rate. Consideration may be given for exception experience and qualifications.
